Six of one, half dozen of the other

In Canada, media on October 2, 2007 by Robert Jago Tagged: , , ,

A good article in the post today about media bias and the lie of equivalency. By the way, if you’re wondering, the fellows in the picture are 14 and 16 years old, gay and Iranian.

I was reminded of the phenomenon last Friday, when Globe and Mail columnist Rick Salutin served up a particularly fine example of the genre. His subject was Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a theocrat who denies the existence of the Holocaust, even as he plots to perpetrate a second. Naturally, Salutin sees Ahmadinejad and Bush as two “buffoons” to be dismissed in the same breath. His logic: “Criticisms like those made against the Iranian leader can easily be made of the West, and George Bush, and often are: about Western hypocrisy regarding gays or women; or science being subjected to religious standards; or human-rights outrages such as Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib.”

Dear Friend:

We urgently need your help. Our rouse re-launch campaign drive will be

What the hell?

In Rosie O'Donnell, USA, media on June 28, 2007 by Robert Jago

Ok – I must have been in a cave or something for the last couple days – I didn’t see this pic. That’s Rosie O’Donnell’s daughter dressed as a? I geuss she’s going for US soldier, but it doesn’t quite work. The bullets? Is that what she thinks soldiers are like?  She makes her look like a terrorist.
Most of the response on her blog is negative – and she’s taken down the picture – but here’s something from her ‘base’:

“Jessika
Oh, WOW Vivi looks beautiful.! the fact that U let her explore her imagination like that shows what a good mom U R. In some countries though, they are training terrorists that young, how sad is that?”

Here’s the rest of the costume…

In which a scientist makes love to a rat – I think

In Animal Testing, media on June 19, 2007 by Robert Jago

A friend of mine is a reporter for a major daily. From time to time he’s forced to write a feel good story about something really boring. Read one of these stories and his contempt for his subject shines through.

Here’s an article on animal testing by National Post writer Max Harrold. You can judge his feelings on the subject. Here’s how his article begins:

A squeak, a tail flick, quicker breaths: these are the signs Jim Pfaus looks for in his lab rats to see if he’s hurting them too much.

“There are signs of pain,” said Mr. Pfaus, a professor of neuroscience at Concordia University’s department of psychology who studies rats’ sexual behaviour.

“If they struggle, or vocalize, I know they’re feeling it too much.”

Eww. The article is not available on-line, but it’s titled: “Rats Enrich Scientific Progress: Professor”. It can be found on page A6 of the June 18th National Post.

British Press Welcomes its Islamic Overlords 2

In Euston Manifesto, Politics, The left, islam, israel, media on June 10, 2007 by Robert Jago

[I say '2' because the first quasi-related blog post is here]

Today I was looking at the British ‘National Union of Journalists’ website and saw their ‘International Activity’ section. They had a list of all of their international campaigns and I was pleased to see one there for Cuba.

About bloody time. Maybe I had the NUJ all wrong. I thought they were leftist ideological extremists, [actually 'Bonapartists' for those who speak Trotskyite] because of their boycott of Israel.

But running a Cuba campaign, well bravo. As you may know, Cuba has one of the worst records on press freedom in the world. ‘Reporters Without Borders’ ,the world’s premier advocate for press freedom, has a running press freedom tally on their homepage called the “Press Freedom Barometer”. So far in 2007, 47 journalists have been killed, and another 68 cyberdissidents (i.e. bloggers) and 125 journalists have been imprisoned. The largest group of imprisoned journalists are Chinese. The second largest group – Cuban.

Reporters Without Borders deserves endless commendation for its defence of Cuban dissidents. Here is what they say about Cuban rights violations and philocubans:

Cuba has many admirers all over the world, more than any other government. The Cuban revolution retains a deep-seated, romantic appeal many still find hard to resist. Castro fans find reasons to forgive or turn a blind eye to the revolution’s crimes and shortcomings. Many who have never set foot in Cuba see it as a symbol of the struggle against US imperialism and therefore think it should be spared all criticism. Even if that means ignoring its human rights violations.

So getting back to the NUJ. Bravo again for their campaign for press freedom in Cuba. But, I speak too soon. Their Cuban campaign? The National Union of JOURNALISTS isn’t standing up for their imprisoned Cuban journalist commrades, oh no, that would be too close to their mandate. They are standing up for Guantanamo detainees. Their target isn’t the Castros, but Bush.

With that nuance done away with, I geuss I was right in thinking that they are leftist ideological extremists. What then of the NUJ’s ‘Boycott Israel’ campaign referred to above? First if you don’t know, the NUJ wants to boycott Israel for these reasons:

…the slaughter of civilians by Israeli troops in Gaza and the IDF’s continued attacks inside Lebanon following the defeat of its army by Hezbollah.

[and]

…Israeli aggression in Gaza and other occupied territories.

There has to be a unifying principle that would require an organization to support suspected Al Qaeda terrorists in Cuba and call for “sanctions [to] be imposed on Israel by the British government and the United Nations”. I went looking for this principle and as often happens these days, this lead me to Facebook. The National Union of Journalists has a group there, complete with comments.

The group hosts a debate on the boycott. The leading opponent is BBC reporter what struck me most was a comment by a countryman of mine and a former journalist for the New Statesman, Leigh Phillips (the group’s admin) in support of the boycott:

The world is currently at war and the heart of the conflict between the West and Al Qaeda is threefold (Al Qaeda’s consistently stated three demands for an end to hostilities): the Israeli occupation, the presence of US troops in the Middle East, and US support for authoritarian Middle Eastern regimes. There can be no end to this war until Israel ends the occupation. What more important battle is there to pick?

In other words, boycott Israel, because it will mollify Al Qaeda. Now, I’ve written about why that won’t work below, so I don’t want to get into the practicality of it. But let me state Phillips’ argument again: “Al Qaeda’s consistently stated three demands for an end to hostilities [are ending] the Israeli occupation, the presence of US troops in the Middle East, and US support for authoritarian Middle Eastern regimes…What more important battle is there to pick? “

And so here is your unifying principle: this member of the National Union of Journalists isn’t just opposing the Blair or Bush governments, but he is supporting the enemy. They’ve gone from dissidence to actual treason.

Is it surprising though? They’ve been there on the other side for a while. Read the Guardian or the Independent and tell me they’re on our side. Don’t believe me? Here’s the Independent:

how come our midgets still pretend they are fighting the Second World War, that Saddam was Hitler on the Tigris, that Nasser was the Mussolini of the Nile (this really was Anthony Eden’s description!), that they are standing up to appeasement, and al-Qa’ida “fascism”? Is there not some way of switching this nonsense off?

Look around and you’ll see that it’s not only the British journalist establishment, but the left in general that has gone turncoat.

Terry Glavin summarized this best when writing about the Canadian ‘anti-war’ movement, but it’s applicable to the British media:

…this is war, and these people are not on our side.

For more on the boycott, take a look at these articles:

 + Haaretz – Retaliation!

London Welcomes its Islamic Overlords

In Anglosphere, Atheism, Human Rights, Politics, immigration, islam, media on June 7, 2007 by Robert Jago

They don’t call the religion ’submission’ for nothing:

It’s the capital’s fastest growing religion, based on noble traditions and compassionate principles, yet Islam can still be tainted by mistrust and misunderstanding. Here Time Out argues that an Islamic London would be a better place…we should recognise both what Islam has given this city already, and the advantages it would bring across a wide range of areas in the future.

Although England has a long tradition of religious bigotry against, for instance, Roman Catholics, it is reasonable to assume that under the guiding hand of Islam a civilised accommodation could be made among faith groups in London

Hitchens on Hugh Hewitt’s show Tuesday

In Anglosphere, Atheism, Blog, Conservative, Hitchens, Philosophy, Politics, Republicans, Secularism, media on June 4, 2007 by Robert Jago

For wrap up – full audio – extra comment from Mark Roberts, click here.

3 hours of Christopher Hitchens and Hugh Hewitt going head to head. Maybe that’s a tad overblown because I don’t think it’ll be the least bit antagonistic. Hugh Hewitt is one of the fairest interviewers on radio, he listens to people and lets them have their say. Hitchens is a regular guest on Hewitt’s show (as are Lileks, Steyn, and Yoni Tidi which are three more reasons to listen to it).

Hewitt for the uninitiated is a “God Blogger”, an author of a detailed bio on Mitt Romney, and a professor of constitutional law. He worked in the Reagan administration and built the Nixon presidential library. He’s right on the war, and wrong on God and the source of morality.

You can download Hewitt on iTunes, but you’ll need to register at Townhall.com . You can listen to the show streamed over the internet here. I’ll be putting up a downloadable .MP3 of the show on Wednesday. Until then, here is a sample of Hitchens on Hewitt’s show:

Below, from Hugh Hewitt’s Blog:

The Great God Debate

Posted by Hugh Hewitt | 4:27 PM

“The Great God Debate” is Tuesday, June 5. The entire show will be given over to a debate between Christopher Hitchens, author most recently of god Is Not Great, and Dr. Mark Roberts, theologian, professor, pastor, New Testament scholar and author of many books including the just published Can We Trust The Gospels?

Dean Barnett sits in for me as I travel tomorrow and prepare for the conversation. A show has 15 segments, and the first four of each hour will be given over to a proposition which I will put on the table and to which Hitchens and Roberts can respond and then cross comment or pose each other questions. If you would like to suggest one of the propositions –there will be twelve in all, as I will give the last segment of each hour which is short for brief statements by both participants– you can send it to me at hugh@hughhewitt.com.

The Great Canadian Wish List

In Atheism, Canada, Human Rights, Multiculturalism, Philosophy, Politicians, Politics, The left, cbc, islam, media on June 1, 2007 by Robert Jago

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Hi! to all the CBC employees emailing this link around on their corporate email accounts: https://gwpilot.cbc.ca. Shouldn’t you be working or something? Somewhere in Nunavut there is a guy who isn’t bored.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

I found this on Ali Eteraz’s blog:

Diversity, the idea, is good. Diversity, the social engineering project, in which each colored, each religionist, each sexual preference, is praised for the simple fact that he or she exists, is a load of crap…

Ali Eteraz direct’s readers to a Facebook Group called “I Wish Canada”

I Wish Canada is run by the CBC and allows people to post wishes and then allows users to add support to the different wishes. One of the wishes is to get rid of official multiculturalism – officially the wish is called “Celebrate what binds us rather than what divides us”. The wish is summarized below:

I wish Canada would do more to celebrate what brings us all together, rather than institutionalise everything that divides us under the cover of multiculturalism. I recognise our diversity, but I am tired of being forced to celebrate a system that forces us to find our own ghettoes and create 21st century tribes.

On its 140th birthday, I wish the use of religion and ethnicity by Canada’s political parties to garner votes would become a source of embarssment rather than pride.

I added my support to that. In fact you can add your support to any of the 474 wishes listed there. Come Canada Day CBC will be presenting all of the wishes on a TV special:

CBC News will be following the discussions on Facebook, looking for patterns and trends that emerge. We’ll also be reporting about the people behind the wishes on CBC TV, CBC Radio, CBC Newsworld and online at cbc.ca/wish. As Canada Day approaches, we’ll summarize the top ideas from Facebook, and come up with “The Great Canadian Wish List” just in time for July 1st.

Take a look through those 474 Wishes. The leftist ones aren’t doing so well. ‘Canada out of Afghanistan’ has only 77 votes while ‘More Liberty in Canada’ has 133 (including mine). The best one – “Privatise the CBC’ has only 55 (including mine again). Their wish is summarized as:

“There is no greater waste of our tax dollars than the CBC.”

I would encourage anyone with the time to go through the list, see if there’s one you can support, maybe if enough people go, we could let the CBC know just how out of touch they are.

UPDATE: I was looking through the groups I don’t like and saw one “Let’s Not Support Israel” . I took a look through the wall posts and saw that the top post was by a CBC Employee (someone part of the CBC network at least):

Zionists selfishness has exacerbated a colonial situation that may otherwise have been integrated without too much bloodshed. But no, they just *had* to have their own religious state. And to assuage our guilt over the Holocaust, the West gave them whatever they wanted regardless of who they displaced. Shame on us for wiping our hands of it like that.

I clicked on some of the supporters of that and found another CBC employee, ‘Alec Forbes’. Google his name + CBC and you find the personell coordinator for ‘CBC Unlocked’.

Anyhow, it’s not exactly a surprise, so getting back to business, here are my wishes (click below) Read More »

Rabble wants your spare change

In Blog, Canada, Politics, The left, media on May 31, 2007 by Robert Jago

When’s the last time Smalldeadanimals, or Littlegreenfootballs emailed you to beg for cash? Never. Hopefully never. This is a phenomenon of the left.

I got an email today from Judy Rebick’s Rabble, begging for my spare change. It seems that they’re down on their luck after their dear leader broke with the Greens .  That came on the heels of their internal rift over a labour dispute that lead to  strikes, boycotts and spam attacks by their supporters.

So now they’ve come begging, offering a redesign and some ‘awesome’ gifts:

- New voices on the site, including in-house rabble blogs, comment features on articles and podcasts, and more opportunities for visitors – YOU – to interact with the site

- Greatly improved navigation and search functions

- Multi-media such as video, slideshows, interactive graphics and rss feeds (which allow visitors to subscribe to some content)

- A much greater ability for rabble to adapt the site to the needs and wishes of visitors

[BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! -ed]

- A $500 dollar gift certificate from Grassroots Environmental Products

- A chocolastic gift pack of fair trade organic chocolate from Coco
Camino $150 value.

- A unique rabble Canadian 5 CD music collection. Value, priceless
(but if you were going to buy them it would cost you about $75). CD set is:
(and the list is growing): Jill Barber (album: For All Time), Be Good
Tanyas (album: Hello Love), Mark Berube (Album What the River Gave the
Goat), Christa Couture (Album: Fell Out Of Oz), Bruce Cockburn (album: Life
Short Call Now)

Oh boy, I can turn my favourite hippie site blue, watch a slide show on a feminist sewing collective in Mongolia and listen to a sexless monotone Torontonian talk about the CBC! Well, that makes up for them being more boring than the New York Times.

You can read their email by clicking below
