Tonne of searches looking for this post. Thought I’d do a mitzvah and post it again:
Today is the 50th anniversary of the release of Atlas Shrugged. So all day I’ll be throwing up posts related to Atlas Shrugged and Objectivism.
Let’s start with Stossel. This is a youtube video of a segment of his that reminds of something that happened to me a few weeks ago.
I’m in Vancouver and we’re in the 80th day of a garbage strike. Some of the more enterprising homeless have started picking up garbage and asking for handouts. It’s a good racket. I saw one guy and he was doing that and also carrying a sign that said ‘I need a job’.
I run a recruitment company. We have an IT division and a hospitality division. We focus on foreign workers, but we also take locals. We currently have an inventory of nearly 400 unfilled jobs.
I gave this guy money, my business card, and quarters for the phone and said ‘call me tomorrow and I’ll give you a job as a labourer – $12 per hour, 5 days a week’. He said he’d call. He didn’t. Watch the video to see why.
