MORE Dion Plagiarism?!

… or just misplaced quotes – though I suppose that’s what they all say, isn’t it?  I misplaced the quotes … According to the academy this does count as plagiarism:

The most common offense under the Code of Conduct (Academic) is plagiarism which the Code defines as “the presentation of the work of another person as one’s own or without proper acknowledgement”… When you are using someone else’s exact words, you need to place quotations marks (“. . .”) around the words.

Well you tell me.  Keep in mind the AP story is based on a webcast interview and not a press release.  It looks like AP is paraphrasing from that webcast and the Liberals are stealing directly from AP.:

Canada must succeed in its green revolution – Stephane Dion

March 14, 2008

And also last week – it was a busy week! – the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released its environmental outlook report that shows that the world must deal with climate change now or pay a much higher price later. In two decades, unchecked environmental damage could leave half the world’s population without adequate drinking water. It pointed out that we have a window of opportunity now, but that window is closing and we could cause “irreversible damage within the next few decades.” It compared the impact on the environment if we keep the status quo with the results if strong action is taken worldwide. Economic growth would be nearly the same in both cases, but with a much healthier environment if we act now.

Report: World must act on climate change now – Associated Press

March 3, 2008

OSLO (AP) — The world must deal with climate change now — or pay a much higher price later, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said Wednesday.

In two decades, unchecked environmental damage could leave half the world’s population without adequate drinking water, the OECD’s secretary general, Angel Gurria, said Wednesday.

Personally, I don’t give a damn.  I’m happy politicians read widely, and if they put a quote in the wrong spot, so what?  I don’t even care if they steal or plagiarize policies word for word from other parties or other governments – as long as they work.  It’s politics – it’s about making things work, it’s not some ethereal quest for “the truth”.

  2. How about a sise-by-side comparison of Dion’s Clarity Act with the private member’s bill drafted by Harper well beforehand ?

  3. They could probably have put some sort of quotes around a text, but since they mention in the line before what it’s based on, it’s not exactly plagiarism. The whole paragraph deals with the OECD report, so I don’t think it’s necessary to quote each line, since it’s pretty obvious where the information was gathered from. The Libs did acknowledge the OECD, so it’s not plagiarism.

  4. 1. I dare you to try that at college.

    2. They didn’t acknowledge the AP – which is where the copied text comes from.
