I saw this episode of Penn and Teller recently. Though I had long ago made the same conclusion about carbon credits, Penn and Teller’s comparison of carbon credits to catholic indulgences is absolutely perfect.

carbon credits offset against someone elses debits are a zero point end game in a global market.
that being the case there will always be the same amount of carbon,. only some people will get rich from it while someone looses money just like the stock market. the governments would be better off raising taxes and using that money to encourage carbon reduction. this is just like the tobacco argument. raising the price of cigarette taxes doesnt not make people healthy if they still smoke. it only makes the government more $$$
