A photo from the Phoenix Lander yesterday surprisingly moved me. It’s of the probe’s lidar.
The photo shows our flag stuck on the end of the familiar government logo. The sight of that flag on Mars means something so much more to me than a thousand CBC’s, or Governor General’s awards. Unlike so much of Canadian nationalism, these kinds of things aren’t about other people – about being better than them, or more moral, or different, or any of that pointless nonsense. It’s only about us and the things we can do.

Great picture. It’s great to see Canada taking a bigger role in space exploration. I think it’s going to help encourage young people to be more interested in science. I don’t think there’s enough interest.
