The NDP aren’t very good at this

The NDP are protesting Tory leaflets which paint Jack Layton as out of touch with the west. Look at the number of seats the NDP got in Alberta and Saskatchewan - zero. Those Tory leaflets aren’t stretching the truth. Anyhow, from the NDP:

Those leaflets are hate-mongering, plain and simple, towards Toronto, trying to vilify somebody because of where they come from. We don’t circulate pamphlets with (Prime Minister) Stephen Harper next to an oil derrick or the Husky Tower as if that was a reason to hate a person,” [NDP MP Pat] Martin said.

But heaven for fend, that kind of talk is divisive! After all democratic party politics is all about everyone agreeing on everything. Wait a minute … what’s that there on the NDP site. Why isn’t that Stephen Harper dressed up like an oil worker in front of the Alberta oil fields?

Why yes it is. Take a look at that story on the NDP website where they attack Alberta, the PM and former Alberta Premier Ralph Klein. Talk about divisive!

This rubbish is what you can expect from dippers - they’re mudslingers. And they’re evidently not good at it - you’d think they’d take the ‘Alberta thing’ off their website before they accuse the PM of regionalist hate speech.

But I’m sure there’s an apology coming. The NDP are actually getting pretty good at those - as with hockey, it’s practice, practice, practice. From the website of Brent St. Denis (MP LIB):

With startling reliability, Jack Layton’s NDP has been forced to apologize several times for misfired attacks and smears against their political opponents.
NDP MP Libby Davis had to apologize and the NDP had to pay monetary damages to a B.C. Liberal candidate after her party falsely accused him of trying to bribe an opponent in the last election.
NDP MP Irene Mathyssen had to apologize after falsely accusing a government member of looking at “soft porn” on his laptop computer in the House of Commons.
The Afghan Ambassador to Canada is still waiting for an apology from NDP MP Dawn Black after she accused Canada’s Defence Department of writing Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s speech to Parliament.
NDP MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis tried to smear Liberal MP Ralph Goodale by implicating him in an RCMP investigation concerning Income Trusts. Mr. Goodale was unequivocally exonerated by the RCMP and Ms. Wasylycia-Leis has yet to apologize.

I don’t like these kind of visual attack ads which try to get a negative reaction simply from the way another political leader is visually portrayed. However, the NDP uses a lot of these so I’m really surprised to see them taking another party to task for this particular approach. Actually the Tory ad looked rather tame compared to some of the NDP ads which use this approach.

I am just wondering what the point of all this might be?

You should have ended your post there. Unfortunately, having accidentally found yourself atop the high ground for once you then proceeded to leap off it into the sewers below. That’s not your fault though. I think that sort of behaviour is genetically coded into conservatives.

Good catch, if I’d seen the quote of Martin’s I would have thought to do the same thing.
