Again? Mooching hippies…
From a Rabble email:
Dear Friend:
We urgently need your help. Our rouse re-launch campaign drive will be
ending soon, but we have decided to extend it by one more week, with the
draw of our fabulous prizes being held on Wednesday July 17th (though of
course we will always accept the generous support of our visitors). We
still need to raise approximately $12,000 dollars to meet our on-line
fundraising goal and to move significantly forward in bringing more
voices, views and interaction to rabble.ca. You can contribute right now
by making a secure donation at www.rabble.ca/donate.

rabble, now is the time. We ask that you give what you can. rabble.ca is

and are not owned or supported by any corporation. rabble.ca depends on
support from organizations and from people like you.And for contributions of $25, $50, $100 or more, not only will you be

• a gift box of Cocoa Camino fair trade organic productsDuring this campaign we have been grateful to hear praise from a wide
range of people, some of whom have lent their name to our campaign:• “. . . It is no exaggeration to say that the hopes for a decent world
rest substantially on the success of the kind of work that rabble.ca has
been carrying out with such distinction and dedication.” – Noam Chomsky• “Pursuing rabble is part of my routine to keep up to date on politics,
opinions, and what’s new. I like that its reader owned and I feel like
I’m doing something good when I go to rabble. I encourage everyone to
support rabble’s re-launch campaign.” Libby Davies MP, Vancouver East,
NDP House Leader• “Every mainstream paper has a ‘business section’, but where are the
daily stories about labour, social justice and real environmental
action? One steady source for the past six years has been rabble.ca
featuring ‘news for the rest of us’. Please join me in supporting
rabble’s re-launch – adding new features and voices to a vital and
progressive news site.” George Heyman, President, British Columbia
Government And Service Employees’ Union• “I think rabble is a unique way for progressives to communicate and
learn. Not only in Canada, but throughout North America and beyond. In
my view, the site has been an invaluable presence in the grassroots
effort to revive the left through the Internet. I support rabble and I
urge other progressives to do so as well. rabble has earned the support
of progressives everywhere.” “josh” from babbleWe love the support we have received and are very eager to earn more as
we present the new rabble which will include more content, blogs,
videos, comment features, rss feeds, better searchability and more.
rabble.ca will remain free to read, free to listen, free to comment.
However, even with significant volunteer hours it is never free to operate .Can we rouse you to support the rabble re-launch? You can contribute
right now at: www.rabble.ca/donate.We believe our redesign will bring new people to rabble and provide a
better experience for our regular visitors. This is a crucial funding
drive for our redesign and re-launch and we are depending on your support.
Lefty alt-media outlets are notoriously puritanical about advertising — the don’t want to run much of it, and certainly none from advertisers that are declared ‘evil’ by the fashionable left. The theory is that somehow or other, advertisers turn publications into their gutless puppets or something along those lines. So they turn to their readers.
Unfortunately, direct appeals suck worse than advertising. All of a sudden, you’ve got to be really careful about being too diverse or counterintuitive for the readership base. Most readers who’re paying little or nothing aren’t about to boycott a publication if it runs the odd piece that’s ideologically incorrect. Readers who are donating over and above what they’d pay to access the publication are a whole ‘nother story. (This is also something the Western Standard risks with its appeals to readers.)
As you might be able to tell, I’m fine with lots of advertisers paying lots of money — especially if it results in jobs that actually pay the rent.
